Federal department is booking commercial flights for Canadians who want to flee violence
Only about half the seats booked on a commercial flight to enable Canadians to depart Lebanon on Monday were actually used, according to a count released by Global Affairs Canada.
The flight in question travelled between Beirut and Istanbul. Additional flights are scheduled to leave Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday with about 600 seats available, said the Global Affairs statement. Global Affairs is booking such flights, but passengers are on the hook for the costs of the travel.
According to Ms. Joly’s department more than 5,500 Canadians, permanent residents and immediate family members in Lebanon have expressed interest in leaving the country as Israel focuses attacks on Lebanon and Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas. And over the last week, Global Affairs said it has helped 1,150 people leave Lebanon.
“The government must do better to provide clarity and timely communication with those who are trying to leave and clear the backlog of requests for seats on commercial flights while they are still available,” Mr. Chong said in a statement.
