Tracy Fleury is experiencing a significantly more positive Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Thunder Bay, Ontario, compared to her previous visit four years ago. In 2022, Fleury arrived at the Canadian women's curling championship as a skip for a wild-card team competing in an empty arena due to COVID-19 restrictions. Unfortunately, she contracted the virus and endured a solitary quarantine in her hotel room, missing all but the final three games while her team battled on without her.
'It was a tough week and a strange time for sure,' Fleury recalled. 'It was a challenging week not knowing when I would be able to play, and very isolating being in a hotel away from your family and team for that long.'Fast forward three years, and the 38-year-old from Sudbury, Ontario, has found herself in a much more favorable position. As Rachel Homan's vice in Thunder Bay, Fleury has been instrumental in the team's dominance, leading them to six consecutive victories to open the championship. With an impressive shooting percentage nearing 88% on Wednesday, she's been a key factor in their success. 'It's nice to actually be able to go out and explore the city and try the restaurants,' Fleury expressed.Homan, Fleury, along with front end Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes, previously achieved an undefeated run to clinch the Canadian title in 2024 and secure the world championship. This Ottawa Curling Club foursome is poised for another impressive performance in Thunder Bay, with a playoff berth already secured. 'The goal, of course, is to win it, but there's a lot of different ways to do that, right?' Fleury stated. 'We just go one game at a time and try to bring our best.' The competition is fierce, with teams vying for the top spots in each pool. The top three teams from each pool of nine advance to Friday's Page playoff, where four berths will be awarded. The champion crowned at Fort William Gardens on Sunday will represent Canada at the world championship in Uijeongbu, South Korea, from March 15-23, along with a $100,000 prize.
