“We had a front seat when those babies were born,” said Rhonda Hart, who lost her 14-year-old daughter, Kimberly Vaughan. “We know how they came into this world, but we're not allowed to know how they died? That's really, really hard to know what their last moments were. It really would give us some closure and, also, a sense of justice.”, would allow prosecutors to release the evidence to family members as long as they agree not to copy or record the information.
The shooter was most recently declared unfit to stand trial earlier this month, again pushing back any legal proceedings against him. He has been receiving treatment at a state-run mental health institution since November 2019. He recalled watching the televised trial of the shooter in Parkland, Fla., late last year, seeing family members relive the horrors of the 2018 Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Though many of the relatives — some of them are now Scot’s personal friends — had the opportunity to view evidence before the trial, it was still extraordinarily difficult for them to see it in court, he said.
