A botched jewelry store robbery in Markham, Ontario, led to the arrests of five individuals, including three teenagers. The suspects were unable to gain entry to the closed store despite wearing ski masks and carrying sledgehammers.
Five people, including three teenagers, are facing charges in connection with a failed robbery at a jewelry store in Markham over the weekend. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in the area of Denison Street and Kennedy Road. According to investigators, two suspicious vehicles were observed in the vicinity, with one acting as a lookout while the other dropped off four individuals near the store.
Witnesses reported seeing several people in a parking lot wearing ski masks, carrying sledgehammers, and garbage bags. However, they were unable to gain entry into the building as the store was closed for the day. York Regional Police launched a swift response, deploying a helicopter to surveil the area. The footage captured officers boxing in the vehicles and pursuing the suspects as they attempted to flee. Two adult males, aged 27 and 21, and three teenage boys, aged 14, 15, and 17, have now been charged with robbery. Const. James Dickson of the York Regional Police highlighted the concerning trend of young people being recruited for robberies by older individuals. He explained that under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, teenagers often face less severe penalties compared to adults, making them vulnerable targets for exploitation. Police revealed that at the time of the alleged robbery, one adult and two of the teenagers were already on release orders for unrelated offenses. One suspect remains at large, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to their arrest
