Clancy Grandy and her team are representing the host province at this year’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts with a go\u002Dfor\u002Dit attitude.

At 3-2 through the first five days of the Scotties after thumping Nunavut’s Brigitte MacPhail 12-4 on Tuesday morning, the Vancouver women are proving they belong and could, indeed, make some noise.

“I really like the girls, and I really liked what I saw from them, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is a good opportunity to give it everything,’” said Grandy, of relocating to Vancouver from her native Ontario. “And I think nowadays, it’s what you need to do, because the rest of the curling world is strong and a lot of them are full-time athletes.

Right out of the chute came a first-event runner-up finish to Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni at the Summer Series in St-Felicien, Que. Grandy & Co. then turned around and defeated Tirinzoni a week later in the final of the Curling Stadium Martensville International in Saskatchewan before winning the HearingLife Tour Challenge grand-slam event in Grande Prairie, Alta., in October.

“We’ve played some really good competition, and it’s pushed us to bring our best quickly. And we knew because of where we wanted to go as a team, that’s what we needed to do. For us as a team in our first season, we decided we wanted to play as much as possible. We started the season close to 50th in the world, and we knew if we wanted to be an in-contention team we had to go out on a little bit of a limb and sign up for all the best events and for as many as we could.
