President says support of community organizations made project possible

Long-time search director Dave Walsh and president Ashley Perry showcase the Valley Search and Rescue’s first brand-new mobile command centre — a gooseneck trailer pulled by the organization’s first brand-new truck. KIRK STARRATTKENTVILLE, N.S. — For the first time in its half-century history,VSAR president Ashley Perry said one of the most important things about the new mobile command is that it’s reliable.

He said that, structurally and physically, the new mobile command centre is much better for the command staff. The bus was drafty and cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. There was no insulation, it didn’t have air conditioning and it didn’t have adequate heating. All these issues have been addressed with the new trailer.

The new trailer is squared, opposed to the curved ceiling of a school bus, so it’s easier to mount equipment such as flat screen monitors, white boards and bulletin boards and create the space needed for search operations. President Ashley Perry and long-time search director Dave Walsh in Valley Search and Rescue’s first new mobile command centre. There’s lots of room to spread out printed maps and these monitors allow command staff to view a real-time tracking map while also using search management software. KIRK STARRATTPerry said the price tag for the new mobile command centre was more than $60,000, and they only went about $300 over budget.

Perry said they’ve always taken great pride in what they do but having the ongoing support of community organizations and now a 10-year capital funding agreement with the County of Kings is “gratifying” and “humbling” to the members. “They are certainly a valuable addition and complement to the other emergency services in our area,” Fullerton said.
