After months of delays, the first large group of Sudanese refugees has arrived in Canada under a family reunification program.

After months of delays, the first groups of Sudanese refugees are beginning to arrive in Canada under a family reunification program that aims to rescue several thousand of the many millions who have fled their homes in Sudan’s horrific war. A flight on Monday brought 25 Sudanese women to Canada – the largest organized group under the federal program so far. They were flown from Port Sudan to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and then to Toronto and other Canadian destinations, with help from the United Nations migration agency.because of the high risk of sexual assault by the soldiers and paramilitary fighters who have been waging a catastrophic war for the past 20 months.Lila Harbo, a 32-year-old civil engineer from Sudan, arrives at Pearson airport. Lila endured over 24 hours of travel through four cities with her sister, Rayan, to enter Canada.There were emotional scenes at Pearson airport in Toronto as the women were embraced by their Canadian family members. “They were overwhelmed,” said Ranya Elfil, a Sudanese-Canadian community activist who has been working on the family “They were extremely happy,” she told The Globe and Mail. “They couldn’t believe they made it. We didn’t feel this was going to happen.” The earliest arrivals under the Canadian program were in early November, she said, but the group on Monday was the largest organized group so far.
