First ever grizzly bear sow and cubs spotted officially on Vancouver Island

Posted: Aug. 15, 2024 5:13PMFor the first time ever, a grizzly sow and her two cubs have been caught on camera on Vancouver Island.

“There’s sort of a progression. Young males show up and they go looking around. Often they leave and don’t come back and then eventually it’s the precursor to adults showing up and adults staying, and it seems to be the pattern on Vancouver Island,” said Mowat, a carnivore specialist with the B.C. Ministry of Environment.

“Honestly it’s unlikely a female with young cubs, she’s unlikely to swim a long distance, across, with young cubs,” said Mowat.
