Sporadic traffic of tankers out of Westridge headed to Asia is an indication that a twinned Trans Mountain pipeline might not be met with huge demand for that oil
The large tanker Erik Spirit left Burnaby’s Westridge Terminal on April 4, after a two-day loading, and is expected to arrive in Qingdao, China, on April 23. Qingdao, on the northwest coast, is home to a Sinopec refinery capable of producing 120 million barrels of refined product a year.
“I don’t have any contracts in place to move 34 tankers a month,” Anderson said. “The market will decide how many.” Based on those figures, during the record low export year of 2016 only around 18 large tankers visited the terminal . China imported no crude oil from Westridge in 2016 or 2017, and on average during the previous eight years bought 2.6 million barrels a year. By contrast, the U.S. imported on average 18 million barrels a year that travelled through B.C. since 2008.
