There was a major incident in Surrey when a large blaze broke out aton Sunday afternoon, and firefighters also battled a fire which destroyed crops in a field in Burgate, Suffolk.
He said: “The weekend was exceptionally busy, with firefighters attending several significant weather-related incidents across London and the Brigade’s 999 control officers taking thousands of calls.People across the country are urged to continue avoiding barbecuing in parks and open spaces, to ensure cigarettes are properly disposed of, and to clear away rubbish and glass which can magnify the sun and cause fires.
“Data shows that the UK is set to continue experiencing hotter days and summers, so unfortunately, we are likely to see more prolonged periods of dry heat, which helps fires to take hold.” He said the fire services are “stretched” as they have not been sufficiently funded by the Government for a number of years despite a noticeable increase in wildfires.
