Clearing operations Wednesday resulted in the release of a cloud of dust, no emergency officials say
Some Sudbury residents in the area of Glencore’s Falconbridge smelter facility noticed a cloud of dust envelope the location Wednesday morning. Although the incident appeared to be an explosion, the company says the incident was a plume of dust created during cleaning operations.
Iyo Grenon, senior communications specialist for Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, said the incident occurred at 9:45 a.m. May 29. Planned cleaning of the roaster off-gas system at the smelter resulted in a large release of dust.Authorities were notified, she said, and the investigation into the “root cause” is ongoing. She also confirm no sulphur dioxide was released in the incident.
Greater Sudbury Fire Services Deputy Chief Jesse Oshell said the company did notify officials about the incident, which he described as an “abnormal escape of dust.”And while there appears not to have been an emergency this time, Oshell said Fire Services is following up with the company to establish a protocol for incidents like this.
“We are following up to see what we can do to get better communications out to the community,” he said. Oshell explained that the city and Vale have a protocol in place to inform the public when incidents occur that could impact the wider community. If members of the public have any questions or require further information about the incident, they can contact Glencore’s community line at 705-693-2761 ext. 3989.
