When Ethan Woolf heads for St. Lawrence College next fall, he’ll be a step ahead of his classmates in his pre\u002Dfirefighting training program.
Youth aged 15-17 participating in a training program with Ottawa Fire Services as part of the Scouts Canada Fire Venturers program in Ottawa Wednesday night. Ethan Woolf practices getting his gear on Wednesday. The program was founded four years ago and is patterned after a similar partnership between Scouts Canada and the Ottawa Paramedic Service. Its leader was Jeff Dean, an Ottawa firefighter who died last summer in a parachuting accident.
“They wear the same uniforms as we do and they have their own crest on the shoulder. We treat them just as if they were cadet firefighters,” said Firefighter Jon McNaught, who’s also been involved since the beginning and took over as head of the program after Dean’s death. McNaught, 37, was himself a medical venturer with the paramedic service as a teen.Article content
With Woolf and other fire venturers aging out of the program at the end of their high school years, McNaught is looking for new recruits, ideally girls and boys 14-15. You don’t have to be in Scouts to join, but must at least register with Scouts Canada to take part.
