How does that work for a person as closed-off as Carolyn? Thats my job, isn’t it? Playing Carolyn has always had an element of distance and control, and elegance of mind. She’s sort of like a samurai, she can fight off all comers with that. Grief is an axe to your sternum, and someone more integrated than Carolyn could just yield to it, but Carolyn isn’t built like that, so it’s been challenging to be true to her as well as the level of grief she’s currently suffering.
Carolyn doesn’t smile very much, she’s not very ordinary in that way, but I never thought of her as weird. She thinks, and I think that probably makes her a very sensitive person. I loved season 1, where Carolyn went to Russia and was in love with Russia: She has this phenomenal zest for life and I love that in her. She’s oblique and she doesn’t necessarily notice what normal people notice, but I find her very lovable.
