24-year-old Fiona Kolbinger is the first woman to win Europe’s legendary Transcontinental Race, a nearly 2,500-mile ride that is one of the toughest races in cycling: Via BicyclingMag

Coming into the race, Kolbinger was a relative unknown in competitive cycling. A Google search revealed that she spent some time in the Eppelheim Poseidon triathlon club, but that’s about it as far as her public record in the sport.

Which makes her surprise victory all the more impressive. This year was Kolbinger’s first attempt at the grueling competition where riders must be fully self-supported, receiving no outside assistance or drafting off other racers.Getty Images She reportedly survived on no more than four hours of sleep each day, usually in a bivy sack on the roadside. And she rode for at least 19 hours a day, enduring everything from frigid thunderstorms to scorching heat and high winds.

The 2019 Transcontinental Race marked the first time the event has traced an east-to-west route. The first two editions started in London and headed east, finishing in Istanbul. The ensuing four years saw the race begin in Belgium and finish twice in both Turkey and Greece. Massive tire clearance for up to 41mm tires.
