A Finnish multi-purpose icebreaking vessel — touted as one of the most modern and powerful when it was launched 30 years ago — is taking up icebreaking duties in the Canadian Arctic this fall and winter, and it has a unique connection to Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I was over there about six weeks. There were a few issues as we went through trials. It was very interesting. This ship had a lot of equipment, a lot of firsts. In fact, I think the first GPS compass in the world was on this ship. I watched the guys up on the bridge top above us here fiddle with that for hours and hours, all through the night and day. And it was that type of event at that time, there was a lot of firsts on this ship.
"And that took a lot of time bringing all that together. And I see that equipment is still on here today. But this ship was the first for that.”With a length of 116 metres and hull width of 26 metres , the Fennica is designed differently than most Canadian icebreakers. There is a large amount of open deck space located behind the bridge and accommodations superstructure towards the bow.
Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation is a Canadian mining company, mining iron ore at the Mary River operation in the Qikiqtani region of North Baffin, Nunavut.The Fennica is captained by Hanna Kujala, who followed in her father’s footsteps of taking big ships to sea.
