Finland is calling on social media influencers to help during the coronavirus crisis.

“Some people trust social media influencers more than the media,” said Tero Koskinen, the head of preparedness for the media section of the Finnish national emergency supply organization.

Koskinen said the goal of the collaboration is to find procedures that help social media influencers to communicate fact-based information. Finland's small population, 5.5 million, might also help get the message across. “In the U.S., you have to go through management and there’s a lot of bureaucracy. In a small country like Finland, you can be very influential in your genre with 5,000 or 10,000 followers,” Fernández said.“If we can get a high school student with around 1,000 followers to share information, that is valuable too.

As the collaboration develops, Lahti sees a lot of room for experimentation. Could the world see a TikTok video with Prime Minister Sanna Marin? “I wouldn’t shut it out as an option. Our government and civil servants have understood that social media is an important and valuable way to communicate. They are ready to try new things,” Lahti said.
