Jim Rassol, MBR / TNSUsed to be, the easiest feat in the world was to declare oneself morally superior to Baylor. With its repeated, systemic mishandling of rampant sexual assault allegations in its football program and across its campus from 2012 to 2016, the Waco university and many who worked there set an ethical bar so low that everyone else couldn’t help but clear it.
His meaning was not exactly coded. The world knew what he meant by “south of here.” At Baylor, those in charge ignored the abhorrent and excused the inexcusable, and almost everyone agreed on this. That’s always an encouraging thing to hear about the man you’ve hired to fill a high-profile leadership position on a team that just became the sport’s best feel-good story while playing for a national championship.Great. While we’re on the subject, it’s also worth mentioning that Kendal Briles never was accused of sexually assaulting anyone, nor was he accused of actively covering up any such allegations.
Are those comments criminal? No. Do coaches at other schools make similarly inappropriate claims? Perhaps. But considering that Briles never has so much as publicly acknowledged he or anyone on the coaching staff fell short in their handling of allegations at Baylor, it’s worth wondering why a TCU program with a bevy of well-qualified options would want this guy.
The bottom line is that TCU apparently doesn’t think that what happened at Baylor — or at least the handling of it by those in positions of authority — was all that unforgivable.
