Finger: After passing on Becky Hammon, Celtics find a real distraction
The Celtics could’ve made history and hire Becky Hammon as the NBA’s first female coach. Instead, the former Spurs assistant led the WNBA’s Aces to the title.As the Boston Celtics searched for a new head coach last summer, among their options were two longtime Gregg Popovich assistants.
No matter how impressive a woman’s coaching résumé might be, would players respond better to someone with “natural gravitas?” Whatever the case, Hammon didn’t get that job, and wasn’t hired in Orlando after interviewing with the Magic, and was not among the candidates brought in by the Celtics, who wound up hiring Udoka.
“In some ways, I feel like the NBA maybe is close,” Hammon said. “In other ways, I feel like they’re a long ways off from hiring . I don’t know when it could happen.” It turns out, Hammon knows a thing or two about motivating, and about designing plays. It isn’t outrageous to imagine that a few of the sets she drew up for Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson might have worked for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
