Widowed at 37, Hannah Cohen was still grieving when her sight began to fail.
We had been married for 12 years when, on the last morning of November, in 2017, Andrew, then 41, went for one of his regular morning runs on the streets surrounding our home, near Manchester. He suffered a heart attack, there in the biting cold, and died two days later, leaving a void that still feels impossible to fill. Overnight, me and our – my – two children, then eight and 11, had to press reset on the happy life we had known.
It was another unremarkable morning in November, three years later, that I woke up unable to see things in the same way. As I squinted to apply mascara in the mirror, an immovable blind spot clouded the central vision of my left eye. I dismissed it as nothing, as you do, but as the weeks went on I couldn’t ignore an ever-increasing worry that something was really wrong. I visited the optician, then a doctor, but before there was time for any conclusive test results my right eye worsened.
Finally, in April 2021, on my 41st birthday, I received the news I had been dreading: I was diagnosed with a rare, underlying and undetected condition and the damage was “irreversible”. The finality of that word, delivered in a calm, medical tone down a phone line, hit me like a sucker punch, extinguishing the faint, final glimmer of hope I’d been holding on to. But here it is.
