A reflective piece on the current state of the world and the importance of finding individual happiness amidst negativity.

We've hit the quarter-mark of the 21st century . Yep, I said it, so start dating yourself with the sentences that follow. Seems like only yesterday, I was standing at the front of my elementary school classroom fresh off winter break reciting the day, month and year (something my teacher did to encourage public speaking among my classmates). 'Jan. 3, 2000.' I've learned a lot in the 25 years since then. And heaven knows I've observed a lot, too. We currently live in an age of negativity.

It's very easy nowadays to see or hear something deplorable, inexcusable or down-right sad that brings our soul to its lowest depths. What can we do in those moments? There's no easy answer, in my humble opinion. I envy my child, nieces and nephews; the only downside to life for them right now having to go to bed. I sometimes wish I could relive those days. We never had a care in the world aside from knowing what made us happy; learning, drawing, time with friends, playing sports, taking up an instrument, pursuing dreams and the occasional N64 game (ah, youth). But we can be encouraged in knowing that we all have something to enjoy that's unique to ourselves. Perhaps it's a passion that we discovered as children, too. So, if you're reading this, I strongly urge you to sincerely and wholeheartedly find something that makes you happy. Escape from the world at the movie theatre, hop on a bike and follow a new trail, treat yourself to whatever you want at the mall, call a friend or family member you haven't seen in a while, stuff your face with your favourite snack or plop on the couch and take a nap. These can be a life preservers in times of turmoil and tribulation, and can help you remember that there's harmony in your own timeline. Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome to 2025
