To qualify for an award, a vehicle must be all-new or substantially changed, and of course available to consumers. It looks like the all-electric Lordstown Endurance pickup just barely squeaked in under the wire — the Ohio-based start-up began production at the end of September but has reportedly only built two trucks for commercial fleets, and hopes to have 50 out the door by the end of 2022, but it’s struggling for financing.
All of the SUV finalists are battery-powered, the first time that any category has come down to all-electric for the final three. NACTOY reported that half of its jurors said 10 per cent of all new-vehicle sales will be EVs by 2023 to 2025; the other half said between 2025 and 2027.Of all the vehicles eligible for the 2023 NACTOY awards, 40 per cent were electric, and jurors predict that they will be 50 per cent in 2024 or 2025.
The finalists were named at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and the winners will be announced at a special event in Detroit on January 11, 2023. The NACTOY awards were first handed out in 1994. Last year’s winners were the Honda Civic ; Ford Maverick ; and the Ford Bronco .
