Radiant animation makes it a feast for the eyes, but the story feels thin, and the plot is driven by — municipal bureaucracy?
Things change when Ember meets Wade Ripple , a city inspector and water type, who literally falls out of a pipe in her father’s basement – a real douse ex machina. Seems he was sucked into the city’s sewers while investigating a leak, and now has to report that her father’s shop is not up to code, which could mean closure.
Anyway, laying on the kind of stereotyping that is only allowed when you’re talking about fictional ethnicities, the movie decides that Wade is all laid back and go with the flow while Ember is energetic and driven . It’s a littleGotta hand it to the animators: the characters and cityscapes are amazing to behold.It’s also a rather simplistic tale, with the major impediment to its characters’ togetherness being the laws of nature rather than the prejudices of people.
Kudos to the animators, by the way, who create fantastic cityscapes and marvelous, shape-shifting creatures that would have been impossible to render back in Pixar’s early days.
