A mural in Houston's Fifth Ward's rapidly changing East River was recently vandalized...

, there were more than 44,000 residents in Fifth Ward, according to U.S. Census tract data. Fifth Ward was bounded by Buffalo Bayou to the south, Jensen Drive to the west, Liberty Road to the north and Lockwood Drive to the east. The community had hospitals, schools and businesses and was predominately housed by African Americans.

Stevenson was joined Thursday at the mural by Sandra Edwards, a community leader and activist for the group"This is a form of intimidation and we're not going anywhere," Washington said."I don't know who did this, but it offends me. It offends me to my heart. I couldn't even sleep thinking about this."

"Public art serves as a powerful medium for expressing our shared values, promoting unity, and celebrating our culture," Ellis said in his statement."This is an affront to these principles and an attack on the very fabric of our community. In moments like these, we must come together as a community and reassert our commitment to unity, justice and equality.”"I think this is crazy, I think this is very racist. It's a disgrace" Edwards said.
