FIFA president Gianni Infantino raises hopes that Iran will lift ban on women entering soccer stadiums before World Cup qualifying game next month
Female Iranian spectators cheer during a friendly football match between Iran and Bolivia at the Azadi stadium in Tehran, Iran on October 16, 2018.
Infantino said in a statement Thursday "now is the moment to change things and FIFA is expecting positive developments starting in the next Iran home match." FIFA's statutes prohibit discrimination by member federations and could allow for Iran to be suspended from international football. Infantino's latest attempt to put pressure on Iran did not impress the Open Stadiums women's group which is campaigning to end the ban.
