Major Canadian storm causes power outages across San Diego County
Nearly 8,500 San Diego Gas & Electric customers were without power early Wednesday, and Caltrans was preventing high-profile vehicles from using part of Interstate 8 in the East County due to fierce winds generated by the first wave of a frigid Canadian storm.Gerald and Melba Kooyman, who live in the Torrey Pines neighborhood of San Diego, awoke to a loud crashing noise and found glass from a broken light fixture on the foot of their bed around 2:45 a.m.
He said he drove through the tree branches before pulling over. “I kept going, blasting through it, but it totaled the car,” he told OnScene TV. He said he was uninjured. The system also dropped more than a half-inch of rain in some areas along with snow. The National Weather Service said that Palomar Mountain could receive up to 6 feet of snow through Sunday while Mount Laguna gets up to 4 feet.
