The Charlottetown Islanders’ hockey season ended at Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown with a 7-1 loss to Baie-Comeau on April 3.

In my view, with so many rookies, the fact the Islanders made the playoffs in a rebuilding year was the best we could hope for.On the NHL front, despite a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on April 3, Toronto is one of a few clubs now playing its best hockey of the season. That was evident in a recent 6-4 home win over Florida where the Leafs played with confidence, the goaltending was solid and the much-maligned defence played a physical game and exhibited playoff-style hockey.

In the loss to Tampa Bay, with the score tied, Keefe left Reaves and the fourth line on the ice in Toronto’s end against Tampa Bay’s first line. The result was a give-away and Tampa Bay’s winning goal. Davis Schneider slugged a two-out home run in the top of the ninth to provide the heroics. The next day, Jays manager John Schneider rewarded the previous day’s hero by sitting him on the bench in favour of Kevin Kiermaier, 1-for-18, .086; Daulton Varsho, 3-for-21,.143, and Cavan Biggio, 3-for 17, .171, who are all better defensively, says the manager.

The Jays didn’t want right-fielder Teoscar Hernandez; he’s now with the Dodgers and has four home runs and 10 runs batted in, and they helped turn Arizona into a playoff contender by trading Lourdes Gurriel and Gabe Merino for Varsho. Lourdes has three home runs and 10 runs batted in. ... Brady Doyle’s highly-regarded pacer Cabot Beach has taken a month’s holiday in Ohio. Also in the Buckeye State, Melissa and Brian MacRae went down to see their baby Elliot Moose, who was in to go at Northfield but scratched with a foot ailment.
