The Toronto Blue Jays’ front office continues to make moves that have most baseball fans wondering if Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins know how to field a championship team, writes columnist Fred MacDonald. - Tijana MartinThe Toronto Blue Jays’ front office continues to make moves that have most baseball fans wondering if Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins know how to field a championship team.

The Blue Jays get Swanson, who pitched 53 innings in the regular season with Seattle with a 1.68 ERA but one inning in the post-season, and a couple prospects. That’s like trading a battleship in Hernandez for a lobster boat. Early this week, they landed speedy defensive centre-fielder Kevin Kiermaier, who hit .220 with seven home runs for the Tampa Bay Rays. He’s a left-handed hitter, but I’m not convinced that he’s better than Raimel Tapia, a left-handed hitter with some power who hit .265 with seven home runs and was a catalyst for the Jays down the stretch. He was a useful player and will be a lot cheaper than Kiermaier’s $9 million for one year.

Another home team I like is Cleveland against visiting Baltimore. Browns QB Deshaun Walker makes his second start, and the Ravens are minus their two top quarterbacks. Cleveland covers the 2.5 spread. Here’s another Bill Belichick special – Patriots at Vegas. Belichick will find a way to stop Raiders’ back Josh Jacobs. Pats win as one-point road dogs.… Live harness racing continues Dec. 17-18 with 10-dash cards at Red Shores in Charlottetown. Post time each day is 12:30 p.m. The $3,000 mares open goes in Race 9 Dec. 17 with the Dreamfare Zenfire and Acefortyfour Dome on the outside against Plain Jane, Share the Moment and Write One on the inside.
