Gavin McKenna of Team Yukon puts on a show in hockey
Gavin McKenna goes behind the net and tucks the puck in the other side against the Northwest Territories during Canada Games hockey action Feb. 20 at MacLauchlan Arena. - Jason Malloy/SaltWire NetworkCanada Winter Games officials have to be pleased with the crowds attending the P.E.I. Games at apparently all sites but especially the hockey rinks where 3,500 fans filled Summerside’s Credit Union Place to see Newfoundland drop P.E.I. 7-1.
Let’s hope Island fans can get a chance at seeing this phenom in action with Yukon this weekend, although it may not happen as the Pool C Yukon club will face much stiffer competition. In a short best-of-three, upsets can happen, and we just watched one here Monday at the APM Centre in Cornwall. UPEI is a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of club, looking like champions in beating first-place UNB in Fredericton and like also-rans in two straight losses at home to Moncton. Can they win a game at the Cavendish Cup here in March? Very likely. One factor in their favour – they’ll be fresh and well rested.
