Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez defeated Cristina Bucsa of Spain in a rain-affected match to advance to the third round of the Australian Open.
MELBOURNE — Canadian Leylah Fernandez battled back from a first-set deficit and another rain delay to secure her place in the third round of the women's singles competition at the Australian Open on Tuesday evening. The 30th-seeded Fernandez started her match against Moldovan-born Cristina Bucsa of Spain on a shaky note, losing the opening set 6-3.
However, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, dominating the subsequent two sets with scores of 6-4 and 6-4, ultimately winning the two-hour, 25-minute encounter. This victory marks a significant achievement for the 20-year-old athlete from Laval, Quebec, as it represents her first time reaching the third round of a Grand Slam tournament at Melbourne Park.Fernandez had previously navigated a rain-disrupted opening-round match, defeating Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva with a 7-5, 6-4 victory. Despite landing two aces in Tuesday's match, Fernandez initially struggled against Bucsa, committing more double faults (7-4) and unforced errors (40-25). However, she appeared to gain momentum after a hard-fought second set win and finished the match with more winners (30-13) and a strong saving rate of seven out of ten break points, compared to her opponent's six out of nine.Fernandez's journey in the Australian Open continues as she awaits the winner of the match between third-seeded American Coco Gauff and British star Jodie Burrage. In other Canadian action on Tuesday, second-seeded women's doubles pair Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe overcame a first-set deficit to triumph against Americans Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk. Despite the Americans holding the advantage in aces (5-4) and double faults (2-0), Dabrowski and Routliffe dominated in wins off the first serve, unforced errors (10-9), and receiving points (38-30) during their two-hour, 10-minute victory. Canadian hope Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal was scheduled to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain in a second-round men's singles match later in the day
