Canadian tennis star Leylah Annie Fernandez cruised into the quarterfinals of the Abu Dhabi Open, defeating Lulu Sun of New Zealand in a convincing 6-0, 6-3 match.
Leylah Annie Fernandez delivered a dominant performance in the Abu Dhabi Open tennis tournament, securing a comfortable 6-0, 6-3 victory over New Zealand's Lulu Sun on Wednesday. The eighth-seeded Canadian showcased her prowess on the court, winning 70.8% of her service points and effectively defending against all three break points she faced throughout the match.
The contest lasted for one hour and 12 minutes, with Sun managing to land seven aces but ultimately struggling to maintain control of her service, winning only 47.1% of service points and conceding four breaks on 12 chances. Fernandez, currently ranked 27th on the WTA circuit, extended her season record to 7-3 and advanced to her first quarterfinal of 2025. The 22-year-old from Laval, Quebec, will now face Ashlyn Krueger, ranked 51st in the world, in the quarterfinals. Krueger advanced to this stage after a thrilling three-set victory against fellow American McCartney Kessler, winning 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. The two players have a history of close encounters, splitting their previous two meetings last year. Fernandez emerged victorious in the first round of the Eastbourne International, while Krueger later avenged the loss by defeating Fernandez in the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto.
