The accused prisoner strangled another inmate at Alouette Correctional Centre for Women while she was awaiting trial on charges she’d murdered her mother.

A female prisoner has been convicted of murdering another inmate at the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women.

The accused strangled the prisoner in her cell while she was awaiting trial for the murder of her mom. The daughter’s then-15-month-old son was in the home at the time, but the daughter claimed that he did not witness the homicide. Justice Frits Verhoeven, the judge hearing the case of the murder of the mom, described it as a “shocking, senseless, tragic” killing with no true motive known, but with the slaying somehow rooted in the daughter’s mental condition. But he rejected the defence argument that the accused was not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder.

The trial heard that, before the murder, the accused had committed three assaults at Alouette. In one of the assaults, the victim fell to the floor and the accused began to choke her to the point that she lost consciousness.
