The Hurricanes selected the 17-year-old with the 62nd overall pick in 2023.

Unger-Sorum ended the season with a bang, recording two goals and 10 points in seven games at the U-18 World Hockey Championship with Sweden. Unger-Sorum won silver at the tournament, four months after taking bronze at the World Junior A Challenge.

Unger-Sorum spent most of the season in Sweden’s U-20 league, scoring 10 goals and 46 points in 42 regular season games. He also had nine points in seven playoff games and another six points in five postseason outings with Leksands’ U-18 squad. Unger-Sorum dressed in seven SHL games with Leksands, with his Jan. 28 outing against Orebro being the only game in which he skated in more than two minutes.

A hard-working, playmaking forward, Unger-Sorum is set to play with Leksands again for the 2023-24 campaign. He’s the fifth player the team has signed to an entry-level contract to since April behind goaltender Yaniv Perets, defensemen Griffin Mendel and Domenick Fensore and forward Justin Robidas. The Hurricanes have also inked veterans Dmitry Orlov, Michael Bunting, Brendan Lemieux and Dylan Coghlan to deals, while bringing back Jesper Fast, Antti Raanta and Frederik Andersen.

The Hurricanes were swept in the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Florida Panthers this year, the farthest they had gotten since 2019.
