Feist and The Tragically Hip will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at a gala on Saturday night at Toronto's Massey Hall, with performances by Jeff Tweedy, Finneas, and others.
Toronto indie music mainstay Feist and Kingston, Ont., alt-rock legends The Tragically Hip are among the musical acts who will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame during a star-studded gala on Saturday night at Toronto's Massey Hall.
Feist Honoured for Songwriting
Feist, whose first name is Leslie but is more commonly known by her last name alone, says it was surreal to have her songwriting honoured especially because writing songs begins as such a private act.
She says ahead of the show that she doesn't know of any other event that celebrates the quiet part of songwriting, so it does mean a lot.
Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy and Los Angeles songwriter-producer Finneas are set to perform some of Feist's music.
Finneas, who is Billie Eilish's brother and collaborator, will also induct the singer, known for the hits 1234 and You and I, an acoustic duet with Tweedy.
The Tragically Hip Inducted as a Band
Meanwhile, Our Lady Peace and City and Colour are among the artists performing songs by The Hip, while actor and filmmaker Jay Baruchel will induct the band into the Hall of Fame.
The Hip bassist Gord Sinclair says it's special to be inducted as a band.
He says that group dynamic and the way they wrote together was the most important thing that they did.
Standing alongside bandmates Rob Baker and Paul Langlois on the red carpet, Sinclair added that they literally went around in a circle and bounced ideas off of each other.
To be recognized for that, obviously they're missing a huge part of their circle, but it really, really does mean a lot.
Band frontman Gord Downie died in 2017.
Baruchel says the opportunity to induct The Hip into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is a unique honour.
He says that as someone that was raised to believe that this is the best country in the world, it was always pretty special to him to have a band, a group of artists that were unconditionally Canadian and didn't have aspirations to be anything but that.
And that told him that he could be that, too.
Other Inductees and Performers
Fellow inductees also include the songwriting partners behind Loverboy, Mike Reno and Paul Dean, as well as French-Canadian singer-songwriter Roch Voisine.
Other performers scheduled to take the stage include Allison Russell, Charlotte Cornfield and Amanda Marshall, who walked the red carpet wearing a T-shirt with Loverboy written across the front.
The Canadian singer-songwriter is set to perform the rock band's 1980 hit Turn Me Loose.
Marshall says it seemed only fitting that a woman sing this song because this genre, this kind of music, is very kind of hyper-masculine.
It seemed fitting that a woman sing it and that she be that woman.
Longtime Drake producer Boi-1da is slated to make a special appearance to pay tribute to The Hip.
Also on hand as inductors are songwriter Jim Vallance and Olympic hockey gold medallists Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey.
The ceremony will be hosted by broadcaster George Stroumboulopoulos and singer Marie-Mai.
It will also be live-streamed globally via the Amazon Music Twitch channel and on Prime Video in Canada.
