Canada remains the only G7 country without a national food program
Having a nutritious breakfast at home or at school helps make students happier and more productive. - Contributed photoLike everyone helping ensure students have access to nutritious food when they arrive at school each morning, Jared Purdy would love to see a national food program in Canada.
With a growing emphasis on providing healthy options for kids and not just some sugar-coated cereal snack, Purdy said rising costs as school breakfast programs aren't being spared by inflation. Jared Purdy, regional executive director for the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education, based in Yarmouth, N.S. said inflation may lead to a discussion for more funding for the school breakfast programs the centre administers. - Contributed
“If we find that numbers are up, then our expectation will be some discussion around funding,” he says. “In fairness, though, we are not there yet.”— Jared PurdyThe not-for-profit organization partners with the provincial government and the corporate and private sectors to deliver 38,000 breakfast meals through its 273 Kids Eat Smart clubs daily.
Stoyles has vowed every Kids Eat Smart club throughout the province will be up and running and will offer their services throughout the entire coming school year. Kids Eat Smart is also an advocate for a national food program. Until that happens, Stoyles is confident that, if the need truly arises, the provincial government will be there to help ensure the students they serve won’t go without.
The program uses a pay-what-you-can model, so families have the option of paying in full for their meal , pay a partial amount or not pay at all if they truly cannot afford it. There is just one price for a lunch under the program, but the price had to be hiked to $5.50 from $5 for this coming school year. After a three-month evaluation of food costs, MacLean explains, the program determined inflation has resulted in a roughly nine per cent increase in the cost of food for the program.
