The bracted twistflower is found only in certain areas of the Edwards Plateau. Development and deer are killing it.
Federal officials have proposed granting threatened status to the bracted twistflower, a rare wildflower native to Texas. If approved, the designation would prohibit removing, damaging or destroying the plants.Federal wildlife officials moved this week to protect a rare Texas wildflower that lives mainly in the swiftly developing Interstate 35 corridor between San Antonio and Austin.
In Austin, only about 25 percent of the total potential twistflowers are left on Mount Bonnell and only 14 percent on Cat Mountain, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service. Chris Best, state botanist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Texas, said that Austin and San Antonio"are actively monitoring populations on protected lands and have demonstrated successful management actions. This is a species that could be recovered within a few decades if its remaining habitats are managed appropriately.
