Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe said arts and culture funding helps unite community cultures while also boosting the local economy

The federal government has invested $90,000 to boost local performance technical training and heritage festival performances.

The funding was announced July 18 by Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe for Sudbury Performance Group for the 2023 Northern Arts Festival and Sudbury Performance Group Training Seminars, said a news release.• $26,000 was provided to the 2023 Northern Arts Festival through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage, Local Arts and Heritage Festivals Fund.

• $64,000 was provided for training musicians in lighting and broadcast, through the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund.Sudbury Performance Group was able to host the 2023 Northern Arts Festival, said the release. The festival featured hired local professional musicians, who performed at partnering establishments every night over the course of a month. A total of 100 artists performed throughout the festival, all of which had direct ties to Greater Sudbury.

Additionally, said the release, through the Canada Performing Arts Workers Resilience Fund, the Sudbury Performance Group was able to successfully deliver training seminars for musicians across the North, including 105 in-person and 955 virtually. The sessions included audio and lighting production, and broadcasting and streaming.“We are proud to offer our festival each year for Sudbury audiences.

"We engage local Francophone, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQ+ artists, which is important to Sudbury Performance Group. Additionally, the training offered was important to artists across the province. Especially for those who are in more remote communities such as Massey, Cutler, Wahnapitae First Nation, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation<" Mannisto added.
