Edilson Canaca-Rodriguez was arrested at an Oakland home where DEA agents found a pound of fentanyl and noted that there were “several minors present,” according to court records.
OAKLAND — A Bay Area man was indicted on fentanyl distribution charges that carry maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, court records show.
Canaca-Rodriguez was arrested in an undercover operation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, which set up fentanyl deals with him in October, November, and December, according to the criminal complaint. In one meet-up, he allegedly sold 300 pills and an ounce of fentanyl powder to an undercover agent. All told, the agent bought about a quarter-pound of the drug from him, authorities say.
Prosecutors argued that because of fentanyl’s high potential to cause a lethal overdose, Canaca-Rodrigez’s alleged drug dealing made him a danger to the community, and asked for him to be held without bail. On Dec. 21, U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler agreed to keep him in jail, but on the basis that he was a flight risk, since all his family resides in Honduras.
