“The word “firming” could also mean simply allowing past rate hikes to come home to roost,” Gregory said. “In effect, the Fed has opened the door to a potential pause on May 3.” He added that the median forecasts accompanying the rate decision don’t show a rate cut until 2024. The possibility of more rate hikes this year seems more likely in CIBC’s eyes.
“Prior to recent turmoil, comments from Chair Powell and other Fed speakers suggested terminal rate views were shifting higher in the wake of firmer-than-expected data,” said RBC senior economist Josh Nye. “But recent developments seem to have nixed that, lending today’s decision a dovish tone.”Article content
