A federal judge this week dismissed a patent infringement lawsuit agains the San Antonio Spurs. Florida-based Alvao sued the Spurs, the University of Texas at Austin and and ticket resale company StubHub Inc. in December but didn’t specify the financial damages it was seeking. In arguing that the claims against it should be dismissed, the team said they were “fatally flawed,” in part because they failed to include any “factual allegations connecting the Spurs to the allegedly infringing StubHub platform.”
A Spurs spokeswoman declined to comment. An attorney for Alvao did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Alvao is headed by Yonkers lawyer Raymond Joao, described in the complaint as a “pioneering inventor.” The U.S. Trademark and Patent Office’s website lists Joao as either the sole inventor or one of the inventors on dozens of patents. The patents relate to a variety of fields from sports betting to financial services to electronic health records.
