A federal judge hit pause on a lawsuit challenging Ohio’s new political maps, saying he wants to wait two months to give time for separate gerrymandering lawsuits play out in state courts.

“Accordingly, the Court finds that a brief stay of the matter is warranted to ensure the efficient use of judicial resources,” Adams said in the ruling. Percy Squire, a lawyer for the Youngstown voters, cited the candidate filing deadlines as a reason for the court to rule quickly on the case, and said the federal lawsuit raises different issues than the state ones do.
Ohio elections officials, candidates and voters have been waiting for weeks for a ruling from the Ohio Supreme Court on the new Republican-drawn political maps, which will take effect for the primary election in May. Elections officials, including Secretary of State Frank LaRose, have pushed the court to make a ruling as soon as possible, also citing the filing deadlines.
