Kings-Hants MP Kody Blois visited Concrete House, a provincial heritage property in Centreville, on Oct. 6 to announce a grant of up to $220,000. The money will help fund ongoing rehabilitation work on the structure, which is well over a century old and has served as the society’s museum for 26 years.

Society volunteers are tackling the multi-year project in phases, and there is a lot of work left to accomplish. West said next year would mark the 150th anniversary of Macdonald’s birth. Hurst said the County of Kings has already been very helpful, but they might need more support from the municipality in leveraging federal funding. He said they’d also have to talk seriously with the provincial government about further contributions.

Hurst said the society would also be approaching the public and undertaking several fundraising initiatives. Macdonald was a seaman, world traveller, labourer, artist in concrete and other mediums, pioneer, manufacturer, “and more importantly a visionary.”West said the society considers Macdonald’s Concrete House a work of art with a comparable cultural, historical, and artistic value to that of Maude Lewis House. Macdonald also built the “whimsical” concrete cottages at Huntington Point.
