The federal government has taken the next step in its commitment to offering Indigenous groups an opportunity to buy into the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.

According to the press secretary for Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, a letter addressing the opportunity was sent to Indigenous groups last week., reportedly lays out the plan to sell a stake in the Trans Mountain oil pipeline to eligible communities through a special-purpose vehicle. It also reportedly lays out the financial support the federal government will be giving the groups so "they don't have to risk any of their own money to participate.

The government first announced its intention to explore the possibility of the economic participation of 129 Indigenous groups in the Trans Mountain project in March 2019.
