The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services approved a request Tuesday for Ohio Medicaid to offer benefits for 12 months after a woman gives birth, up from the previous standard 60 days.
COLUMBUS, Ohio –
The state started offering the extended benefits April 1. Tuesday was a final approval from the federal government. “Maternal health is a strong predictor of a child’s health, so by extending health coverage for new moms, we are helping to provide the healthiest possible start in life for Ohio’s children,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement.
In addition to Ohio, HHS on Tuesday also extended Medicaid for Hawaii, where 2,000 women a year will get extended coverage, and Maryland, where 11,000 women will get extended coverage.
