The National Institutes of Health is asking scientists and inventors to compete in a $500 million challenge to develop rapid coronavirus testing technologies in a bid to scale up the accuracy and availability of tests across the country
Infectious Disease Expert: Scientists Need To Collaborate Across Borders To Fight The Coronavirus Pandemic
The technologies will be put through a competitive, three-phase selection process in the search for the best rapid test that can be deployed at home or in a care setting. The finalists will be matched with technical and business experts to accelerate commercialization. The competition is part of a greater Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics Initiative, or RADx, which received a total of $1.5 billion in funding from the federal stimulus package. Collins said the name RADx is a throwback to the “Rad Lab” at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which developed radar technology during World War II.
Much as radar “enabled humans to use radio waves to ‘see’ planes, storm systems, and many other things,” this initiative will speed up the development of tests “that can rapidly ‘see’ if people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 with very high sensitivity and specificity, meaning there would be few false negatives and false positives,” Collins wrote in aEach proposal will be vetted for “technical, clinical, commercial and regulatory issues,” according to Collins.
