‘I don't want to see … people dying for no reason when they can be helped in their own town’: former Whitbourne resident

JOHN'S, N.L. — In the bitter, hand-numbing cold on Tuesday, March 14, almost 100 people gathered on the steps of the Confederation Building in St. John’s to demand the return of emergency room services at the Dr. William H. Newhook Community Health Centre in Whitbourne.
On March 7, Osborne announced a plan for an “urgent care centre” in the area, which opened Monday, March 13. It is open eight hours, three days of the week, with the goal to expand the hours over time.Brittany Whitten and Michael Agate attended the protest at Confederation Building on March 14. Agate, who is from Whitbourne but now lives in Kilbride, said he doesn't want people to die because they don't have emergency services in the area anymore.

Andrew Waterman/The Telegram“Every time that she needs help, we have to go to Carbonear or Placentia and that's taking money out of my pocket that I don't have to go elsewhere for services,” he said. “And when we get there, all those places are blocked up solid with patients already waiting to get in. The corridors all full of people that way.
