BEIJING - Dallas Federal Reserve Bank President Robert Kaplan said on Tuesday he was optimistic the United States and China would find ways to deal with their trade issues.

In a sharp deterioration in negotiations between the world’s two largest economies, top U.S. trade officials said on Monday China had backtracked on commitments it made during trade talks. The sharp rhetoric from Trump followed upbeat U.S. economic data in recent weeks, which some say have given Washington leverage over Beijing during their trade talks.

U.S. gross domestic product grew 3.2 percent in the first quarter, according to an initial government reading last month, beating estimates for a 2.0 percent rise. The economy expanded 2.9 percent in 2018.
