Fears over Blackburn 1950s radioactive waste dump as inspectors support for releasing 94 acres of ‘Green Belt’ countryside

Government inspectors have indicated their backing for a council’s growth strategy including developing a controversial site where campaigners fear radioactive waste is buried.

Controversially the inspectors also indicate support for releasing 94 acres of ‘Green Belt’ countryside near the M65’s Junction 5 where residents fear radioactive waste was dumped down old mineshafts in the 1950s. Blackburn with Darwen Council growth boss Cllr Quesir Mahmood said: “This is very good news for progression of the new plan, and is a testament to the thorough and professional job of the whole team involved. This news keeps the council on track for potential adoption of the new plan this winter, following a final consultation on modifications during the summer and issue of the inspectors final report.

“If the site remains in the Local Plan we will take the campaign against it to the planning process if an application to develop it is submitted.”
