A Beijing security chief had warned that a zero-Covid policy in China could run on for five more years but his comments were quickly retracted.
An official announced China would implement a zero-Covid strategy ‘for the next five years’ – before his comments were quickly backtracked on.
But after the remarks prompted a huge backlash on Chinese social media, all references to the time frame were quickly removed from the publication’s website, citing an ‘editing error’. Despite this, his other comments including routine PCR tests, strict entry rules, regular health checks in residential areas, and rigorous testing for people entering and leaving Beijing stayed in place.
