More than 500 reports of heart disease in dogs and cats linked to some pet foods have been confirmed, according to the FDA. What pet owners need to know:
. The underlying cause of DCM is unknown, but genetics are believed to be a factor.
In July 2018, the agency first suggested a possible association between canine DCM and certain types of dog foods. The FDA's latest update now lists the most frequently identified dog food brands linked with DCM. Protein sources in the diets of pets in reported cases included: chicken, 113; lamb, 98; salmon, 72; whitefish, 65; kangaroo, 58; turkey, 57; beef, 47; pork, 24; venison, 21; duck and bison, 20 each; egg, 18; vegetarian, 7; rabbit, 4; and goat, 1.
