Many of the conversations involved the cavalier usage of a racial slur referring to Black people.
Marcus Arbery Sr. said all humans need to be treated equally after the guilty verdicts in the trial of Ahmaud Arbery's death.BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Racist text messages, social media posts and other digital evidence were heard in court Wednesday during the federal hate crimes trial against the three men convicted of killing Ahmaud Arbery.
Dozens of comments made by two of the defendants – Travis McMichael and William"Roddie" Bryan – dated as far back as 2016. Some were as recent as Arbery's killing on Feb. 23, 2020. FBI intelligence analyst Amy Vaughan, who specializes in digital evidence with regard to terrorism, walked jurors through evidence that included multiple uses of racial slurs, memes depicting disdain for Black people, and shared posts and videos. The FBI wasn’t able to access the phone of the third defendant, Travis' father, Gregory McMichael, because it was encrypted, Vaughan said. The defendants remained mostly straight-faced throughout the proceedings.
“I ain’t really shocked,” Arbery’s father, Marcus Arbery, told reporters outside the courthouse. Still, he said he didn’t realize “all that hate was in those three men.” The McMichaels grabbed guns and chased Arbery in a pickup truck as he ran through their neighborhood in this coastal Georgia town. Bryan, their neighbor, joined the pursuit and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael fatally shooting Arbery.
